Sheffield’s dancehall floggsta Toddla T lets us in on his Carnival secrets: A bag full of exclusive dubplates and classic bashment essentials.

Beats, bass, blunts and girls filled Toddla T’s adolescence until he was crowned as in-house studio boff at Sheffield’s Kenwood Studios at the grand old age of 19. In the home of Dizzee Rascal’s Boy In Da Corner he set to seasoning the audio. Working on material for DJ Cash Money, Roots Manuva and Steve Edwards let him polish his craft until the studio shut, when he dived headfirst into distilling his own bass-heavy jams. Via ingesting kegs of dancehall, digi, garage, Detroit techno, and hip-hop behind the decks, Toddla T has since blazed his unique take on sound system electronics worldwide, whether by his releases on Ninja Tune, teaming up with Roots Manuva, Shola Ama, or Roisin Murphy, or via his BBC Radio One show – he’s always ready for a riddim clash. Wherever he goes, Toddla T carries the spirit of Carnival with him, and here he selects some of his personal favorites and dubs that encapsulate that sound system street party vibe.
